Longarm Machine Quilting:
Kathy’s Red, White, and Black Quilt

Way, way, back in December I machine quilted this pretty little number for my awesome friend, Kathy. She made it for her little sister who requested red, white, and black piecing. When Kathy brought it to me she said “Do whatever you want!” <—Yay!

So I did.

I quilted the whole thing with red thread, for fun.

The quilt has several borders, and a pretty detailed center section, so I decided to try and emphasize that. In the middle, there is a lattice/irish chain pattern that divides the center into diamond shapes. I quilted a leaf chain along that lattice, and then freehand straight lines that alternate direction by row.

In the first border, the skinny red one, I did a simple loop.

In the second border, I did this. I don’t know what to call it.

In the outer red border, this.

I love, love, love how it turned out, but it was so hard to take pictures of.

I ended up having to take them in this high contrast light, which makes it look like I’m trying to be all moody or something. (I’m not.)

Isn’t it pretty?

  1. It’s beautiful. And btw–there’s no such thing as a “simple…” whatever you said, “stitch.” You, my dear, are just really good at what you do.
Keeping the world warm…one quilt at a time.

  2. I love the contrast of the red thread against the black and white. It makes for a more fun and modern quilt. Thanks for being brave for the rest of us.
