It's a very well written design book. The quilt designs were easy to follow. I can't wait to make the minimalist zen.

I like the design style groupings. I think it's easier to understand and grasp than the common styles that you find (i.e. eclectic, modern, etc). Those always confuse me.

It's a nice change of a format from a traditional quilting book.

Whether or not you are an avid quilter, this book will show you how to change the mood and feeling of any room, just by changing the color scheme. Before I even considered making one of the 10 gorgeous quilts from the patterns in the book--I was thrilled with what I learned about grouping colors. Worth ever penny.

This book seems designed for a beginning quilter, or someone who's looking for ideas. There are 10 patterns, ranging from easy to moderately challenging. The pattern on the cover is beautiful, but it's by far the most advanced in the book. For each pattern, Rosenthal offers 5 different color schemes. There's even a Cosmo-style quiz at the beginning of the book, to help you find your perfect type.

Two of the patterns use paper piecing, and a basic tutorial on the paper piecing technique is included. (If you're completely new to the technique, though, a few YouTube tutorials will be a better introduction.) At the end of the book, there is a detailed discussion of batting options, hand vs machine quilting, and even instructions on how to make your own pillowcases with simple embroidery.

Overall, this book could be great if you have trouble visualizing patterns or making your own fabric choices. I'm no expert, but in a few years of quilting I've already taught myself the basics of fabric selection, and this paint-by-numbers approach taught me nothing new.

Disclosure: I received this book through the Modern Quilt Guild, in exchange for my honest review.

I think this book is well done and I would recommend it. I love the idea that it helps you visualize the patterns with different colorways. It starts with a quiz - who doesn't love to take quizes? The quiz tells you which of the 5 styles most suits the reader, but I think the visuals do just as good a job of helping with that. I enjoyed reading the descriptions of style as yet another way to help hone the right one. The 10 patterns are arranged roughly in order of complexity, ending with two which are paper pieced. The photos and instructions are clear and simple. At the end, the author finishes with tips on batting, machine quilting, hand embroidery, and even making coordinating linens like sheets and pillow cases. If you are a beginning quilter this book goes beyond the patterns and the visualization, to help you complete the project. If you are experienced, then the patterns and style ideas are awesome by themselves. CJMQG
