Super Scrappy Soccer Quilt

Soccer-Quilt3

So. I made a quilt.

Soccer-Quilt4

A soccer quilt. The perfect kind to put on the grass and enjoy many a kick.

Soccer-Quilt2

It has scraps from about a million projects, and when I pull it out of the wash and the edges are all frayed? Mmmmmmm.

All I did? Put backing, batting, and background on my longarm, and then placed the scraps where I wanted them, and sewed them right on as I quilted.

Addicting, and awesome.

PS, if you haven’t heard, me and Amy from Amy’s Creative Side started a podcast. Now, you can hear us being quilting geeks once a week. Your life is complete, I’m sure. ;) Head on over to Amy’s blog to hear us chat about our 5 Favorite tools under $25, and to see the links to our 5 favorites. One of these days I’ll figure out how to embed the link here, maybe.

  1. Can I make this on a normal sewing machine? Is there a “pattern” or instructions on your site? This is beautiful!

  2. Would also love greater detail on how you did this and whether it can be done on a regular machine. It is gorgeous!

  3. This is awe inspiring – really! Quilting is wonderful and to find so many different ways to achieve a quilt which seems to keep the process simple (I am a beginner) is so great. It can be quite daunting sometimes. Thank you for sharing your beautiful quilt and your process of making it. Can’t wait to see more. Just – thank you! Jx

  4. Our soccer season starts today with practice. I love the technique you used. This is something I’m going to definitely try. Did the scraps you cut with the pinking shears fray just as much as the scraps cut with a straight edge?

  5. To begin with, action and adventure games involve fighting games, space adventure
games and situational games where the player is required to achieve some objectives.
They are those players who only enter hands that offer good possibilities, but will chase wins and raise when they can.
Clay chips are the best poker chips that
dollars can obtain, and they also final an extended time.

  6. I LOVE this! I’m going to use the same pattern-ish idea for some scraps of baby clothes. Do you know what size you cut the small squares and rectangles into? So I can trim my stuff down?

  7. I love the idea of the scrappy quilt. I am a newbie sewer and Have kept all my scraps from my projects so far – various shapes & sizes. This would be an ideal project for me once I become more adept at creating my own designs.
    Thank you.

  8. So you have the batting showing in between? That’s what it looks like and I just wanted to confirm. Also, if that’s the case, what kind do you use so it doesn’t start coming apart?

    Thanks!

  9. people – she has 3 layers, the backing, the batting, then another piece on top that she sews the pieces on to – I’ll be using an old sheet

  10. I’m going to give this a go, looks like free motiion sewing to me??? going by the foot – going to give this a go

  11. tried this today, I ended up using my quilting foot and the dual feed option,
but you possibly could use free motion sewing if you wished

  12. My goodness !!! So many questions !!! But . where are the
    answers ??
To me this is a real quilt! Don’t get me wrong I really like all the beautiful patterns but they are for show, but this is a
quilt that anyone can just snuggle in and get real comfortable to watch T.V.
I do believe you can figure out the pattern by just studying the photos and doing it.

  13. I need a more detailed pattern for the soccor quilt. Like how to start it, what sizes those squares are, and were they all cut straight edge or all with a pinking shears for starters please? :)

    1. She noted three layers: backing, batting and the piece on top that she sews the squares and rectangles onto. Looks like random with the pieces. Cute and easy. I’d say no pattern needed, just use your creativity :)

  14. So many people want more information or a pattern…so do I. Why put this out there if you are not willing to share?

  15. I agree with Kris Lieb,3 layers, backing, batting,a piece on top of that to sew the different sized squares & rectangles on. (looks like all are straight cut) Let your imagination create a beautiful one of a kind quilt,Good Luck & Happy Quilting

  16. Do you have a pattern for the “supper scruffy soccer quilt.?” Would like to make it. Thank you. Maureen

  17. Hi blogger, i must say you have very interesting content here.
Your page should go viral. You need initial traffic boost only.

  18. April – Love the idea – all those memories. For those of you screaming or a pattern – realize that sometimes we just get cutting and putting pieces together – randomly. You have to get your own creative juices flowing and just follow her basic instructions. A prepared sandwich – backing, batting and a plain top. Then start placing pieces randomly. I would stick on some big pieces 5″ or 6″ or slightly larger and then some long pieces and then just fill in. April – this is great and I will follow up with my project in a few weeks. :) Reb from RebsFabStash.
It was great seeing you at Quilt Market!

  19. I love this so much – I am RUMINATING on how to make it happen. I am a new quilter. I am trying to figure out how i can hold all this together while sewing on my machine. Do y’all use spray adhesives? Or fusible batting? Or just baste (that means pin, right?) the whole thing (which would be hard since we are sewing on the pieces as we go . . . or do we map it all out on the floor, baste and sew?)?
